The esteemed singer behind the iconic Marcus Garvey album, Burning Spear, has expressed his satisfaction regardless of the outcome at the 66th Grammy Awards, where he is nominated for his latest project, “No Destroyer.” As a two-time Grammy winner, Burning Spear is no stranger to the prestige that accompanies such accolades. Still, he humbly acknowledges the joy in being recognized once again in the highly competitive Best Reggae Album category.
In an interview, Burning Spear shared his sentiments, stating, “I’m just a mutual artiste going with the flow of nature, what is to be must be.” While expressing his contentment with the nomination, he emphasized the unpredictability of awards, leaving the final outcome to the hands of the universe. He added, “If I win, all of us are gonna be happy. But I will just leave it in the hands of the universe, it will decide what is to be from what not to be.”
The reggae veteran exuded positivity, emphasizing the enjoyment he derives from the nomination and the happiness it brings to his fans. Regardless of the results, he sees himself as a winner in his musical endeavors. He shared, “I am just happy I’ve been nominated; it’s fun. My fans are happy, they like this and whether or not I win, I will always be a winner in what I am doing.”
Reflecting on his nominated album, “No Destroyer,” Burning Spear drew parallels with his previous Grammy-winning works, stating that it was chosen for its quality and timelessness. He believes that those who appreciate and understand music recognize the standard and excellence inherent in his work. He trusts that the discerning listeners who form the Grammy voting body have identified these qualities in “No Destroyer.”
Looking ahead, Burning Spear remains optimistic about the future, expressing his intention to return to the studios in the coming year. Despite his busy schedule, he is gearing up for an upcoming show in Florida scheduled for March 2024, immediately following the Grammy event.
In a thoughtful reflection on the competition, Burning Spear acknowledged the talent of his fellow nominees, emphasizing the strength and quality each artist brings to the Best Reggae Album category. He recognizes that in the end, someone has to emerge as the winner, but all the nominated artists are indeed “good artistes.”
Among the notable albums competing in the Best Reggae Album category this year are Beenie Man’s “Simma,” Buju Banton’s “Born For Greatness,” Julian Marley and Antaeus’ “Colours of Royal,” and Collie Buddz’s “Cali Roots Riddim 2023.” As the Grammy Awards draw near, the reggae community eagerly awaits the results, celebrating the rich tapestry of talent represented by these outstanding nominees.
