Protoje skillfully weaves together a tapestry of musical genres, seamlessly blending hip-hop, soul, and jazz with the rich sounds of his Jamaican roots in reggae and dancehall. Emerging as a musical prodigy, he garnered widespread recognition for his infectious melodies and conscious lyrics, becoming a prominent figure in the ‘reggae revival’ movement.
The journey to mainstream success began in 2011 with Protoje’s debut album, ‘The Seven Year Itch,’ and the standout track ‘Rasta Love,’ featuring Ky-Mani Marley. However, it was in 2015, with the breakout hit ‘Who Knows,’ featuring Chronixx, that Protoje truly captured global attention. Renowned publications such as Vogue, i-D, Rolling Stone, and The Fader hailed him as one of Jamaica’s brightest talents.
Subsequent hits solidified Protoje’s status, with impactful album releases including ‘A Matter Of Time’ (2018), ‘In Search Of Lost Time’ (2020), and ‘Third Time’s The Charm’ (2022). Collaborations with acclaimed artists like Jorja Smith, Alicia Keys, Wiz Khalifa, Pa Salieu, Popcaan, and Koffee further showcased his versatility.
Having toured with Lauryn Hill and graced the stages of prestigious international festivals like Coachella and Glastonbury, Protoje’s influence continued to expand. In 2018, he took a pivotal step by establishing his own label and management company, Indiggnation Collective.
November 2023 marked the release of Protoje’s latest album, ‘In Search Of Zion,’ via RCA Records. Notably, he collaborated with the production collective Zion I Kings to create a remix album that reimagined his 2020 release, ‘In Search Of Lost Time.’ As Protoje continues to shape the landscape of contemporary reggae, his dynamic musical journey reflects a fusion of cultural roots, global influences, and a commitment to conscious storytelling.
